Drivers can now talk directly to artificial intelligence while cruising down the highway. In a completely unannounced and surprising move, OpenAI just released an update that makes its popular ChatGPT Voice mode fully compatible with Apple CarPlay. This new integration allows drivers to have full, spoken conversations with the smart chatbot using the microphones and speakers built right into their vehicles. The update brings the power of advanced artificial intelligence out of smartphones and directly onto the dashboards of millions of cars.

Getting the new feature to work requires just a few simple steps. First, users must ensure their iPhone runs the absolute latest version of iOS. They also need to visit the App Store and update the official ChatGPT app to the newest release. Once the software is fully updated, drivers simply plug their iPhone into their CarPlay-compatible vehicle. From there, they open the CarPlay dashboard on their car’s screen, tap the ChatGPT icon, and select the “New voice chat” option. As soon as the screen says the app is “listening,” the driver can start talking.

While a smart AI co-pilot may sound incredibly futuristic, the system has some very strict limitations. Right now, ChatGPT cannot connect to your car’s internal systems. If you feel cold and want to turn up the cabin heater, the OpenAI chatbot cannot help you. It also cannot skip a music track, change the radio station, or roll down the windows. For all those physical car functions, drivers must still rely entirely on Apple’s built-in Siri assistant to get the job done safely.

Another major roadblock comes from Apple’s strict software rules. Apple refuses to let third-party applications hijack the car’s listening system. This means you cannot simply say a “wake word” to summon ChatGPT while keeping your hands on the steering wheel, as you can with “Hey Siri.” Instead, if you want to start talking to the AI or resume a conversation you paused earlier, you must physically reach over and tap the car’s dashboard screen to open the app. You have to manually select a recent or pinned chat to get the artificial intelligence talking again.

Despite these heavy restrictions, OpenAI believes drivers will find plenty of creative ways to use the Voice mode during their daily commute. The company suggests using the long drive time to brainstorm creative ideas for work or to ask the AI for step-by-step advice on fixing something around the house. Drivers can also use the feature to actively practice speaking a foreign language with the chatbot while stuck in stop-and-go traffic. Since the AI speaks multiple languages fluently, it serves as a perfect conversational partner for anyone learning Spanish or French before a big trip.

This new CarPlay integration marks a major step forward in the ongoing battle to dominate voice assistance. For years, Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and the Google Assistant controlled the car dashboard market. Now, OpenAI is aggressively pushing its way into that highly lucrative space. As artificial intelligence continues to improve, we will likely see these smart chatbots gain even more control over our daily devices. While some drivers prefer the quiet peace of listening to their favorite podcasts or music playlists, anyone who wants a highly intelligent conversation partner for a long road trip now has the perfect tool sitting right on their dashboard.
