In a recent blog post, Nvidia claimed its upcoming RTX 5090 and current RTX 4090 significantly outpace AMD’s RDNA 3 flagship GPU in AI workloads. According to Nvidia, the RTX 5090 is up to 2.2 times faster than the RX 7900 XTX in DeepSeek R1 model tests.
Nvidia tested three DeepSeek R1 AI model versions using Distill Qwen 7b, Llama 8b, and Qwen 32b. The results:
- Qwen 32b: RTX 5090 was 124% faster, RTX 4090 47% faster than RX 7900 XTX.
- Llama 8b: RTX 5090 was 106% faster, RTX 4090 47% faster than RX 7900 XTX.
- Qwen 7b: RTX 5090 was 103% faster, RTX 4090 46% more performant than RX 7900 XTX.
This starkly contradicts AMD’s findings. AMD previously claimed its RX 7900 XTX was up to 113% faster than the RTX 4090 and 134% faster than the RTX 4080 in its benchmarks. However, Nvidia now paints a different picture, arguing that the RTX 4090 is superior to AMD’s flagship and that the RTX 5090 delivers more than twice the performance of the RTX 4090.
These conflicting reports highlight the importance of independent testing, as both companies present vastly different narratives. While AMD showcased impressive numbers in its AI tests, Nvidia’s response suggests a major gap in real-world performance, at least in DeepSeek R1 AI model workloads.
