AMD plans to release a brand new gaming processor for its AM5 motherboard platform. The company wants to give gamers a cheaper way to access its powerful 3D V-Cache technology. Hardware leakers say the new chip carries the Ryzen 7 7700X3D name. This release gives budget-conscious PC builders a great new option for high-end gaming without emptying their bank accounts.
Right now, AMD sells three different 8-core processors with this special cache technology. Shoppers can choose the older Ryzen 7 7800X3D or the much newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D and 9850X3D models. The 7800X3D remains incredibly popular because it delivers top-tier frame rates for a reasonable price. The upcoming 7700X3D will sit right below it in the product stack.
A hardware insider named chi11eddog leaked the first details about the unannounced processor. The leak shows the chip uses the older Zen 4 architecture rather than the newest Zen 5 designs. It features 8 physical processing cores and 16 threads. This setup gives the computer plenty of power to run modern video games and heavy background applications at the exact same time.
The real magic happens inside the memory cache. AMD literally stacks extra memory directly on top of the processor die. This helps the chip quickly grab the data it needs to render complex virtual worlds. The new chip holds a standard 32 MB L3 cache on the base layer. Engineers then stack another 64 MB on top of that. This combination gives the processor a massive 96 MB of total L3 cache.
To keep the price low, AMD had to slow the chip down just a little bit. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D runs at a base clock speed of 4.0 GHz. When a video game demands more power, the chip boosts its speed up to 4.5 GHz. These clock speeds fall slightly short of the more expensive 7800X3D model.
Specifically, the base speed drops by 200 MHz, and the boost speed drops by a noticeable 500 MHz. Because of this intentional slowdown, experts expect gamers will see a rough 5 percent drop in overall average performance compared to the older sibling. Even with that 5 percent hit, the massive 96 MB cache will keep frame rates incredibly high. After all, even a tiny 1.5 percent improvement in frame pacing makes a huge difference in fast multiplayer matches.
The leak did not reveal exactly how much electricity the new chip needs to run. However, hardware reviewers expect the processor to use between 105 watts and 120 watts of power. This puts it right in line with the rest of the 3D V-Cache family. Gamers will not need to buy a massive liquid cooler just to keep the silicon from overheating.
The PC gaming hardware market generates over $30 billion every year, and companies fight bitterly for every customer. Pricing tells the most important part of this story. The current Ryzen 7 7800X3D usually sells for around $400. Savvy shoppers can sometimes find it for $365 on Newegg or $353 on Amazon. During massive holiday sales, that chip even hit a record low of $324. Meanwhile, the newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D demands a premium, selling for $440 to $450 at most stores.
AMD needs the new Ryzen 7 7700X3D to fit neatly below those current prices. Market watchers expect the company to price the new chip somewhere between $299 and $349. If AMD hits that $299 mark, the processor will instantly become the best value on the market for gamers building a fresh AM5 computer system.
This aggressive pricing strategy takes direct aim at Intel. The blue team recently launched the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus processor to win over mid-range buyers. The Intel chip will easily win in heavy multi-threading tasks like video editing or 3D rendering. However, when it comes to pure gaming performance, the new AMD chip should easily beat the Intel alternative.
