U.S. memory chip maker Micron Technology announced on Monday that it plans to build a second factory in Taiwan. This new facility will be located at the Tongluo site, which the company recently bought from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.

This new factory will help Micron make more advanced DRAM memory chips, including special high-bandwidth memory (HBM). These chips are crucial for meeting the huge demand coming from artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, the company explained.

Micron also confirmed that it has finished buying the Tongluo P5 site from PSMC. The new second factory will be about the same size as its current factory in Miaoli County. Construction on the new facility is set to begin by the end of its fiscal year 2026.

This expansion shows Micron’s commitment to boosting its production capabilities for advanced memory products. With AI technology growing rapidly, the need for powerful and efficient memory chips has skyrocketed. Micron is positioning itself to be a key supplier in this booming market.

The investment in Taiwan also highlights the island’s crucial role in the global semiconductor industry. Taiwan is home to many leading chip manufacturers and has a highly skilled workforce, making it an attractive location for tech companies like Micron to expand their operations.

By increasing its capacity for HBM, Micron aims to support the development of next-generation AI applications, from advanced data centers to sophisticated consumer devices. This strategic move is expected to strengthen Micron’s position in the competitive memory chip market and ensure a steady supply of essential components for the AI revolution.
