OpenAI, the developer of the popular ChatGPT AI chatbot, has officially launched its Korean office, marking its third in Asia and twelfth globally. This strategic move comes amidst the South Korean government’s push for AI sovereignty and signals a significant commitment from OpenAI to the Korean market. The company’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, hinted at substantial future investments, including potential data center construction and expanded collaborations with major Korean conglomerates such as Samsung and SK. These partnerships are already underway, with discussions focusing on hardware and chip technology.

Kwon’s recent meetings with top executives from Samsung and SK Group further solidified these collaborative efforts. While specific details regarding the scale and timeline of OpenAI’s Korean investments remain undisclosed, the company’s commitment is evident in its plans to foster collaborations across various sectors. This includes working with Korean companies, academia, and the government to accelerate the nation’s AI development.

Addressing concerns about potential conflicts with the South Korean government’s sovereign AI initiative, Kwon emphasized Korea’s history of successful international partnerships, highlighting its collaborative approach to technological innovation and global export markets. He pointed to existing collaborations with Korean companies in various sectors, including construction, electronics, telecommunications, finance, and e-commerce, as well as a recent strategic partnership with Kakao.

Further solidifying its commitment, OpenAI will sign a memorandum of understanding with Seoul National University on Thursday to pursue joint research in AI. A celebratory event will also take place, inviting government officials, business leaders, academics, and artists. OpenAI views Korea’s advanced infrastructure, innovative companies, and tech-savvy population as an ideal location for driving AI innovation.
