Canon has revolutionized the cinema camera market with the launch of its EOS C50, a remarkably compact yet powerful device designed to cater to both professional filmmakers and social media content creators. Weighing only 1.5 pounds, this full-frame powerhouse boasts an impressive array of features, including internal 7K 60p RAW recording and the ability to capture stunning 32MP stills. The EOS C50’s full-frame CMOS sensor features a dual ISO system with Canon Log 2 (C-Log 2), providing exceptional low-light performance and ensuring high-quality footage even in challenging conditions.
The camera’s versatility extends to its recording capabilities, offering 12-bit Cinema RAW Light up to 7K 60p, RAW HQ at 7K 30p, and high-bitrate XF-AVC S and XF-HEV C modes. A notable addition is the inclusion of 3:2 open-gate recording, which allows for seamless conversion to various formats —a feature previously lacking in Canon’s cinema line but standard in competitors’ offerings. Furthermore, the EOS C50 introduces simultaneous crop recording, allowing users to output 4K footage and 2K video simultaneously, optimized for vertical platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
Professionals will appreciate the EOS C50’s inclusion of professional-grade features, such as two full-size XLR audio inputs (via optional top handle), a zoom rocker, waveform/peaking displays, C-Log 3 support, and a dedicated start-stop button. Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel autofocus system, enhanced with AI subject tracking for people and animals, ensures precise and reliable focus. The camera also features SD UHS-II and CFexpress slots, as well as a timecode terminal, adding to its professional capabilities. While lacking in-body image stabilization, it relies on optical lens and electronic stabilization to compensate.
Beyond its video capabilities, the EOS C50 excels as a hybrid camera, offering 32MP still images and burst shooting at up to 40 frames per second. Accompanying the camera launch is the new RF 85mm F/1.4 L VCM Hybrid Lens, specifically designed for portrait videography and photography. For compact camera users, Canon also announced an updated version of its PowerShot Elpha 360 HS, the Elpha 360 HS A, featuring a microSD slot. The EOS C50 is expected to ship in late Q4 2025 for $3,899. The RF 85mm lens will be available this month for $1,649, and the Elphel 360 HS A is scheduled to arrive in October 2025 for $380.
